Your Sun Sign position is what you’re really telling people when you announce — or admit — or have the information pried out of you by rude and relentless questions — that you’re a Scorpio, or a Capricorn, or a Gemini. This over-emphasis on Sun Sign traits as the basis of pop-culture Astrology is understandable. It’s a misconception based mostly on convenience. The Sun in its celestial travels follows a stable, predictable course. It stays in each sign approximately one month. It never retrogrades. It rises and sets day after day, season after season, very reliably. In fact everything about life as we know it depends on exactly that. The Sun … being there … doing its thing.

Meanwhile, Sun Sign Astrology, as a representative of the whole body of knowledge, continues to weave its way through the cultural awareness … mainly, as mentioned because it is quick and easy to get a person’s birthday and relate it to one of the twelve divisions of the Zodiac. People like things that are quick and easy. It’s why McDonald’s has sold billions of hamburgers that no gourmet would ever call “good food.”

People want their fun moments of light self-analysis to work the same. So they want their Astrology the way they want their drive-in meal: fast, hot, and familiar. (And if it’s also cheap … hey, that’s another plus.) Sure that hamburger will get you from breakfast to dinner. It will keep you alive. But it may not be nutritious, good for you, or even tasty. But at least when you step up to the counter and get your order, what you usually find in the sack is a complete sandwich. Consider instead how you’d feel if you got 3% of the sandwich … and had to make do with that. Kind of leaves you with an empty feeling doesn’t it? But at least it gives you something to think about — and maybe wanting more.

In addition to this similarity the Chinese zodiac also has 12 signs like its western counterpart.

In particular Egyptians may have contributed greatly to the earth centered model of the solar system. They believed a giant dung beetle pushed the sun through the sky like a giant piece of dung. This earth centered model of our solar system coincidentally seemed to arise around 1.5 BC right around the time the Egyptian and Babylonian studies of celestial objects began.

As you may suspect there are different schools of thought on Astrology. These include Moon signs, Sun Signs, and animal signs. The popular horoscope used in your local newspaper for example is probably based on your sun sign. In contrast the Indian Vedic school of thought would be more concerned with your moon sign. While the Chinese system uses animal signs in their zodiac and is based on the twelve year Jovan cycle. Some even speculate that there may be correlation between Astrological studies and the Tarot deck.

Granted, the Sun’s position is important … and granted the fact that it’s usually nice and easy to locate in one of the 12 Zodiac signs isn’t exactly a bad thing. (Usually a little bit of information or knowledge about any subject is better than nothing at all. Anyone has to start learning about any new subject somewhere!!)

But to single out the Sun as the most important placement in a horoscope does gives it an unwarranted amount of weight in describing a person’s character. Equally important are the Moon Sign and the Ascendant Sign … and of those three, it’s awfully hard to tell which one has an edge, and so deserves extra consideration, over the others. (When you’re making chocolate milk, which is more important … the milk, the sugar, or the cocoa? Leave out one of those ingredients … and whatever you’ve got — it ain’t chocolate milk!!)

However, the process of determining those other two signs, for anyone, is inconvenient. The Moon changes signs every 2 1/2 days, so you need a special book of tables (called an ephemeris) — or at the least an astrological calendar for the year the person was born — to find his Moon sign. And even then, if he was born on a day when the Moon changed from one sign to another, you may still have to guess. (There are ten of those days every month. Your odds of hitting one are pretty good!)

And in order to know a person’s Ascendant Sign (also called his “Rising Sign”), you absolutely must have a birth time. The Ascendant Sign changes every 2 hours. Trying to guess that without something concrete to go on is obviously pretty dicey!!

Even with a birth time straight off a birth certificate, you still have to have either a good Astrology program on your computer (Thank God for people who write software!!) … or you need an ephemeris, a Table of Houses, a book of latitudes and longitudes, and the knowledge of how to cast a horoscope by hand. (In the bad old days before computers … I remember them well … this process could take the better part of half an hour for one chart!!)

There are people who understandably resist (and resent!!) being categorized and “labeled” by preconceptions about their Sun Sign. They feel — and rightly so — that they are far more individual than one in twelve. But add their Moon Sign and its qualities to the mix — which, as I said, gives information that is just as significant, valid, and powerful as their Sun Sign traits — and now each person is 1 in 144. Better maybe, but still not enough you say?

Add their Ascendant Sign to the equation, and each person is 1 in 1728. And there are still 8 more planet placements to consider. Add Mercury — the symbol of the conscious mind and intellectual perspective — and the figure becomes 1 in 5184. Add Venus — the symbol of their social skills, financial talents, and relationship interests — and each person is 1 in 25,920. Starts to get a little more interesting at that point, doesn’t it. And the atmosphere in which each personality exists more rare!

Some astrologers feel Moon Sign information is the missing element in basic Sun Sign Astrology, the reason why many folks justifiably feel Astrology itself doesn’t work — when, in fact, it works beautifully for anyone who knows the craft. So, would adding Moon Sign information to the description catalog of popular Sun Sign Astrology be helpful. Probably. If a little knowledge is a good thing … a little more knowledge is almost certainly better. But I also have to cast my vote on this one with the people who howl that even 144 choices instead of 12 still isn’t enough to cover much ground.

Whether they realize it or not, the skeptics and protestors are making the very same point any competent astrologer would accept immediately — with no haggling whatsoever. If the complete interpretation of your Natal Chart would render a full-color portrait of your character — photographically accurate in its quality and description of you and your potentials — (and it will!!), why settle for a couple of brush strokes from the Sun Sign / Moon Sign palette and wind up with at best an “impression” and at worst a cartoon caricature of who you really are?

The zodiac is actually a group of constellations that form the backdrop to the Sun’s apparent pathway through the sky that extends 9 degrees on either side of the ecliptic. The orbits of the planets (and our Moon) also fall within this zodiac belt. At the same time, Greek sources claim the discovery of the ecliptic during the second half of the 5th century BC. Symbolically, each of the zodiac signs (Aries - Ram; Taurus - Bull; Gemini - Twins; Cancer - Crab; Leo - Lion; Virgo - Virgin; Libra - Scales; Scorpio - Scorpion; Sagittarius - Archer; Capricorn - Goat; Aquarius - Water Bearer; and Pisces - Fish) represent various qualities. This system is convenient because the average person doesn’t have to have complicated planetary positions worked out to know which constellation affects them personally, the date of birth is all that is needed in most cases.

That said, I have to agree half-heartedly, half-jokingly, that sometimes ignorance is bliss — and I sometimes have that thought in the back of my mind as I open up my chart and look at what’s coming over the hill in the next several months … or several years. But ignorance is not such bliss that I’m willing to adopt it as a lifestyle. There’s a real difference between ignorance-as-bliss and sheer-cussed-stupidity. (And for me, informed preparation and a heads-up alert beats them both hands-down.) I have never yet refused to look at my chart because I didn’t want to know what it says. (Maybe that day is coming — but not so far.) And I have to admit that sometimes what stares back at me from that page with all the funny symbols is not one bit joyful.

But to know what I know and not use it — even when the going is tough and really, really unpleasant, makes no more sense to me than slapping a blindfold securely over my eyes as I fire up the car and pull out of my driveway onto the road. Or refusing to look at the map because it may show me that the river I’m sailing on is steering me straight toward one mother-bear of a waterfall. There are some people who are even more adamant about the benefits of preparation than I am … and others who just as firmly prefer the ignorance route. Both are choices — and people get to make them.

But whether you want to be sure you have your life-jacket cinched on well and your cargo tied down twenty minutes ahead of time, or decide to beach the boat and, if possible, carry it and YOU around the problem on a different path, or whether you really “don’t want to think about it” until you hear the deep roar of falling water on rocks and see the edge of the world coming up fast, the information is there. And how you choose to use it … or whether or not you even choose to know about it … can have a real impact on your future, the quality of your experience, and the message you take from whatever happened.

To me, that’s Astrology’s real value. Not as a predictor of “what’s going to happen to me” as a helpless victim of Fate … but as an indicator that there are both pleasures and potholes (to put it mildly) on the road ahead, and I have some things to learn and some choices to make on how to deal with them.
