Astrology studies the celestial bodies affects on humanity. In particular human fate, destiny, and personality were described by the celestial influences of the stars and planets. The roots of Astrology can be traced back to the first or second century BC. Many ancient cultures such as the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Chinese practiced forms of Astrology. Although, the methods of Astrological forecast differed slightly from culture to culture there still remained many fundamental similarities between them. For example Chinese Astrology which evolved convergent to western Astrology had some major differences. The most fundamental difference being the use of the moons 28 day cycle through the heavens as opposed to the Suns* 365 day cycle around the earth(*Note: The Sun does not revolve around the earth but during this period it was the popular belief). The earliest Chinese zodiac divided the lunar cycles into 4 groups each corresponding to a different season and 7 sub groups corresponding to specific lunar mansions in the season. The seasons were given animal based names for example: Spring=The Green Dragon of spring, summer=The Red Bird of Summer, fall=The White Tiger of autumn, and winter=The Black Tortoise of Winter.

Even though the use of the moon in Chinese Astrology opposed the use of the suns movement through the celestial bodies in the Babylonian and Egyptian disciplines some similarities still existed. These similarities included the use of elemental attributes assigned to the planets. For example Saturn= Earth, Mars=Fire, Mercury=Water, Venus=Metal, and Jupiter=Wood. In addition to this similarity the Chinese zodiac also has 12 signs like its western counterpart.

The western use of the sun as the foci for Astrological studies stemmed from the pre heliocentric model of the universe. In particular Egyptians may have contributed greatly to the earth centered model of the solar system. They believed a giant dung beetle pushed the sun through the sky like a giant piece of dung. This earth centered model of our solar system coincidentally seemed to arise around 1.5 BC right around the time the Egyptian and Babylonian studies of celestial objects began.

As you may suspect there are different schools of thought on Astrology. These include Moon signs, Sun Signs, and animal signs. The popular horoscope used in your local newspaper for example is probably based on your sun sign. In contrast the Indian Vedic school of thought would be more concerned with your moon sign. While the Chinese system uses animal signs in their zodiac and is based on the twelve year Jovan cycle. Some even speculate that there may be correlation between Astrological studies and the Tarot deck.

In conclusion, Astrology has substantial scientific, historical, societal, and spiritual foundations. However you look at it the influences of the planets and constellations on our lives is evident in our every day lives. From the ebbing and rising of the oceans’ tides alone it should be apparent that the immense power of the moon has profound affects on our planet. In addition based on this it would stand to reason that as humans composed mostly of water the celestial bodies (ie the Moon) do have a profound impact on our moods, personality traits, and interactions with others. Wouldn’t it?

In describing character qualities, pop culture Astrology deals with Sun Sign descriptions as a matter of convenience. Almost everybody knows his birthday, and from that, he can almost always find himself in one of the Sun Sign categories that describe the creative personalities of humankind. But the Sun is only one of 10 celestial elements in a basic horoscope.

Granted, the Sun’s position is important … and granted the fact that it’s usually nice and easy to locate in one of the 12 Zodiac signs isn’t exactly a bad thing. (Usually a little bit of information or knowledge about any subject is better than nothing at all. Anyone has to start learning about any new subject somewhere!!)

But to single out the Sun as the most important placement in a horoscope does gives it an unwarranted amount of weight in describing a person’s character. Equally important are the Moon Sign and the Ascendant Sign … and of those three, it’s awfully hard to tell which one has an edge, and so deserves extra consideration, over the others. (When you’re making chocolate milk, which is more important … the milk, the sugar, or the cocoa? Leave out one of those ingredients … and whatever you’ve got — it ain’t chocolate milk!!)

However, the process of determining those other two signs, for anyone, is inconvenient. The Moon changes signs every 2 1/2 days, so you need a special book of tables (called an ephemeris) — or at the least an astrological calendar for the year the person was born — to find his Moon sign. And even then, if he was born on a day when the Moon changed from one sign to another, you may still have to guess. (There are ten of those days every month. Your odds of hitting one are pretty good!)

And in order to know a person’s Ascendant Sign (also called his “Rising Sign”), you absolutely must have a birth time. The Ascendant Sign changes every 2 hours. Trying to guess that without something concrete to go on is obviously pretty dicey!!

Even with a birth time straight off a birth certificate, you still have to have either a good Astrology program on your computer (Thank God for people who write software!!) … or you need an ephemeris, a Table of Houses, a book of latitudes and longitudes, and the knowledge of how to cast a horoscope by hand. (In the bad old days before computers … I remember them well … this process could take the better part of half an hour for one chart!!)

There are people who understandably resist (and resent!!) being categorized and “labeled” by preconceptions about their Sun Sign. They feel — and rightly so — that they are far more individual than one in twelve. But add their Moon Sign and its qualities to the mix — which, as I said, gives information that is just as significant, valid, and powerful as their Sun Sign traits — and now each person is 1 in 144. Better maybe, but still not enough you say?

Add their Ascendant Sign to the equation, and each person is 1 in 1728. And there are still 8 more planet placements to consider. Add Mercury — the symbol of the conscious mind and intellectual perspective — and the figure becomes 1 in 5184. Add Venus — the symbol of their social skills, financial talents, and relationship interests — and each person is 1 in 25,920. Starts to get a little more interesting at that point, doesn’t it. And the atmosphere in which each personality exists more rare!

Some astrologers feel Moon Sign information is the missing element in basic Sun Sign Astrology, the reason why many folks justifiably feel Astrology itself doesn’t work — when, in fact, it works beautifully for anyone who knows the craft. So, would adding Moon Sign information to the description catalog of popular Sun Sign Astrology be helpful. Probably. If a little knowledge is a good thing … a little more knowledge is almost certainly better. But I also have to cast my vote on this one with the people who howl that even 144 choices instead of 12 still isn’t enough to cover much ground.

Whether they realize it or not, the skeptics and protestors are making the very same point any competent astrologer would accept immediately — with no haggling whatsoever. If the complete interpretation of your Natal Chart would render a full-color portrait of your character — photographically accurate in its quality and description of you and your potentials — (and it will!!), why settle for a couple of brush strokes from the Sun Sign / Moon Sign palette and wind up with at best an “impression” and at worst a cartoon caricature of who you really are?

Before looking at what the zodiac is, it is important first to understand what the ecliptic is. If you were to imagine what you see when you look up into the sky, and if you tracked the apparent movement of the Sun through it, this is what is meant when the word ecliptic is used. Put simply it means the apparent pathway of the Sun through the sky as viewed from earth.

The zodiac is actually a group of constellations that form the backdrop to the Sun’s apparent pathway through the sky that extends 9 degrees on either side of the ecliptic. The orbits of the planets (and our Moon) also fall within this zodiac belt. The word zodiac stems from the ancient Greeks - zodiakos kyklos, “circle of animals”, or ta zodia, “the little animals” because most of the constellations through which the ecliptic passes represent animals. Although the constellations are irregular in size and shape the 12 astrological signs are generally allocated 30 degrees each.

“The word zodiac stems from the ancient Greeks - zodiakos kyklos, “circle of animals”, or ta zodia, “the little animals…”

The ecliptic was clearly identified and divided into 12 equal signs of the zodiac around 450 BC in Mesopotamia. Most reference sources indicate that the zodiac is a Babylonian invention - the oldest record of the zodiacal signs is a cuneiform horoscope from 419 BC. At the same time, Greek sources claim the discovery of the ecliptic during the second half of the 5th century BC. Like many historical developments it is quite possible that both the Greek and Babylonian cultures developed these systems at about the same time.

Symbolically, each of the zodiac signs (Aries - Ram; Taurus - Bull; Gemini - Twins; Cancer - Crab; Leo - Lion; Virgo - Virgin; Libra - Scales; Scorpio - Scorpion; Sagittarius - Archer; Capricorn - Goat; Aquarius - Water Bearer; and Pisces - Fish) represent various qualities. For example, Aries is represented by a Ram and the qualities of initiative, bravery and assertiveness.

Because the Sun’s (apparent) pathway through the heavens is basically constant and can be found at roughly the same spot for the same date in each year, this is how we came to use Sun Signs: the position of the Sun in relation to the backdrop of the zodiac constellations. This system is convenient because the average person doesn’t have to have complicated planetary positions worked out to know which constellation affects them personally, the date of birth is all that is needed in most cases.

Instead of considering only astrological Sun signs, we believe that the comprehensive astrology and numerology charts must be scrutinized if one wants to consider true personality, compatibility, and personal timing (prediction and forecasting). Also, thorough handwriting analysis done by a well- trained professional adds a great deal of additional insight about subconscious character, much of which that can’t be found through modern, psychological astrology.

On the surface, you may think you have great astrological compatibility on paper with two seemingly easy-going, compassionate people (signified in part, for example, by both having an abundance of Pisces and Cancer energy).

However, it’s discovered that one has very compressed, narrow, extreme right-slanted, sharp, angular, heavy pressure script with rigid baselines and downward slanting, weak-ending, pointed letter t-bars. Plus, strong patterns of over-balanced “8″ and “1″ energy are found in the comprehensive numerology charts. All of this with other corroborating information alerts the analyst to the strong possibility of that person being a domineering abuser.

The other person’s comprehensive charts involve, in part, lots of under-balanced “2″ energy which suggests dependency and self-deprecation. In support of these notions, that person’s script includes martyr/victim traits such as small overall script size, light writing pressure, close word spacing, excessively rounded and immature- looking writing, droopy rhythm and connectives between letters, pinched circle letters, low and weakly crossed letter t-bars back to the left instead of to the right, and x-formations where the letter x is not present.

In this case, a surface astrology interpretation would unfortunately leave open the potential for a very toxic, if not dangerous match.

An aside, psychology was not part of astrology until about 100 years ago. The approximately 2000 year tradition of the science of astrology involves mostly prediction instead of psychological character analysis. Unfortunately, in our view, most astrology found today in print or on-line is primarily modern, psychological astrology, and involves a frivolous and distorted approach to the science.

Astrology that’s largely for entertainment only (although usually not presented as such) includes, for example, Sun or Moon sign horoscopes, and readings done by astrologers who commonly promote falsehoods such as, “…(numerology or) astrology isn’t predestination or fate…how things play out is going to be up to you,” stated to cover a refusal to do in-depth delineation, or mask an inability to do accurate prediction.

Some popular modern astrologers even go so far as to offensively suggest escapism, wishful thinking, self- fulfilling prophesies, and a failure to take responsibility for one’s actions and life in response to the idea that some astrologers and numerologists (like us) say it’s possible to measure and outline personal fate (i.e., impart the general inclination of fate, and frequently, even precise future circumstances and events). Worse, they deny that fate exists, and also deny the reality that varying degrees of unavoidable adversity (which is also measurable) in people’s lives serves a divine purpose.

The truth is that their form of astrology or numerology isn’t about predestination or fate and that original ancient predictive astrology and numerology are absolutely about predestination and fate.

It’s ironic how fully embracing the concepts of karma and fate is directly related to taking responsibility for one’s actions and that much of the modern astrology found today offers mainly an escape from the hard realities of life.

Reviewing Sun Signs, Moon Signs, or any other individual aspect without considering the rest of the charts’ contents and patterns within those charts, will only give you surface insight. It tells you virtually nothing about the reality of the personality, or the compatibility between you and another person.

For example, the Sign of Aquarius is considered to be relatively harmonious with the Sign of Sagittarius. If you select ten random people with Aquarius Sun Signs and match them with ten people with Sagittarius Sun Signs, it’s entirely possible that none of them will get along with each other. It’s also entirely possible that all of them will get along.

The best romantic matches for a Libra Sun and Cancer Moon combination, for instance, depends entirely upon the health of the respective planets (strong and well, or involving afflictions including planets in detriment, badly aspected planets, weak house placement, retrogrades, etc.), their rulers and the health of those rulers, along with the rest of the several hundred aspects, and patterns comprised of those aspects, throughout the comprehensive charts of each person.

It’s possible for a person with a Libra Sun and Cancer Moon, for example, to have wonderful compatibility with a person with an Aries Sun and Capricorn Moon, both oppositions.

Oppositions are commonly considered to involve poor compatibility, but sometimes very close oppositions (opposing planets that are very tightly aspected by a degree or two, within the compatibility charts) offer more reward than challenge, especially if the remaining composite contents are harmonious.

Oppositions are as follows: Aries is opposed to Libra. Taurus is opposed to Scorpio. Gemini is opposed to Sagittarius. Cancer is opposed to Capricorn. Leo is opposed to Aquarius. Virgo is opposed to Pisces.

Conjunctions, same sign combinations, represent intensification of the sign’s energy, and is sometimes positive and sometimes negative. Generally, it’s a “hard” aspect, and not as easy flowing as trines and sextiles.

Although we feel that modern astrology places too much emphasis on Ptolemaic aspects, it’s good to have an understanding of them.

The basic, major Ptolemaic aspects include oppositions (180 degree angle), conjunctions (0 degree angle), squares (90 degree angle), trines (120 degree angle), and sextiles (60 degree angle).

Square aspects are combinations of signs that are of different elements (see below), like Taurus with Leo, and generally indicate challenge and tension. Trine aspects are combinations of signs that are of the same element, such as Scorpio with Pisces (both water), and are generally agreeable. Sextile aspects are combinations of signs that are of compatible, but different, elements such as Cancer with Virgo, or Leo with Libra, and are also generally favorable.

If you accept the trivial approach of reviewing only the Sun and Moon signs, which might offer a preview at best, then it’s good to look at the elemental combinations of the signs for some basic awareness.

On the surface, fire and air are harmonious, and earth and water are harmonious. In addition, each element commonly mixes well with itself (fire and fire, etc.).

Fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.

Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.

Air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.

A surface approach will involve Libra Sun, Cancer Moon compatibility with an air or fire Sun, along with a water or earth Moon, but that’s just the beginning.

If you want to go a little deeper, yet still not get into comprehensive analysis, considering the nature of the sign is also helpful (Fixed, Mutable, or Cardinal), as is considering the masculine or feminine nature of the sign (fire and air are masculine, and earth and water are feminine).

We also strongly recommend contemplating each person’s personal timing when considering compatibility.

Personal timing, comprised of scores of short, medium, and long-term continuous and non-continuous numerological and astrological cyclical timing methods, regularly symbolically makes or breaks relationships. The collective cycles can be divided into groups that are the basis for pattern recognition.

Two people can seemingly have nothing in common aside from their current personal time cycles (some as short as a day, others as long as many years), and when those time cycles change, the relationship changes, or even dissolves.

It should be noted that we understand that it is possible for someone who has strong, solid psychic ability and a good, general understanding of astrology to successfully use Sun and Moon signs exclusively as psychic touchstones. But few have this talent where they can get consistent, accurate reads without a comprehensive approach.

Again, an astrologer must consider all comprehensive charts in determining compatibility, along with the comprehensive timing charts, and not just the Sun and Moon signs if one really wants to uncover existing compatibility. Again, we have found that you also must consider the comprehensive numerology charts, along with handwriting analysis (subconscious fears and defenses, etc.), if you want a high level of accuracy.

A skeptic saying that they “…don’t believe in astrology,” to us, is a reasonable and understandable statement if they have only been exposed to Sun Sign astrology, which is the basis for most astrology horoscopes today.

Comparing Sun Sign astrology to an in-depth analysis as referred to in the above paragraphs is like comparing conspiracy theory half-truths to confirmed CIA intelligence.

Many people enjoy horoscopes and even base their fate and fortune on it. However, not a lot of people know which element of the horoscope they fall on. The four elements namely Earth, Water, Air and Fire are said to reflect human nature’s quality alongside corresponding Tarot symbols such as Coins, Cups, Swords and Wands for Earth, Water, Air and Fire, respectively. The horoscope is a basic guide for astrological forecasts. When casting your horoscope, the exact time as well as date and place of birth are required. Then, mathematical calculations will tell the sign where each planet, sun and moon are placed. Your horoscope chart is unique because it is based on your exact date, place and time of birth. Once it is cast, it can already be used to create astrological predictions throughout your lifetime.

You can predict your future with your own unique chart. But first, you must learn astrology in order to understand your horoscope chart. To read your horoscope chart, you must first understand the four astrological elements and their corresponding signs. For example, Fire element encompasses the signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; Earth with Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo; Air with Aquarius, Gemini and Libra and Water with Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio.

Look first for the Rising Sun, which rises on the eastern horizon at the time of your birth and should be on your horoscope chart’s 9′ o clock position. This is your personality sign and reads your look, your impression towards people and what other people think of you. Also, when making advanced astrological forecasts, you will need the degree of the Rising Sun as well.

Meanwhile, the North Node is a space point that is associated with the moon, which indicates where you are most comfortable and confident in your life. If, at the time of your birth, your North Node is Gemini, then you can be successful in Gemini-leaning occupations such as teaching or writing. The opposite of the North Node is the South Node, which indicates aspects in your life that you are not comfortable with.

How the sun, moon and planets relate with one another define the Natal aspects. How they react is very important and helpful in making critical decisions as well. On the other hand, the outer rim of your horoscope is represented by Cusps, which indicate the kind of luck that every house of your chart may give you. Each of the horoscope’s chart is unique because it explains the basic horoscope which can be otherwise a complex process.

Is Astrology A Science. Which astrological sign is yours. We all know our zodiac sign, many of us check the horoscope page in the newspaper each morning before we go off to work. A large majority of us believe that the position of the planets when we were born controls our personality and also determines the events which occur throughout our lives. It is more than likely that you have met someone who does believe. Whether you are serious about astrology or not, it is often used as an ice breaker in conversation, it is a good way to get to know someone. However, is astrology just mumbo jumbo or does it really have a controlling influence on our lives, is it an actual science?

One of the earliest forms of science known to man is Astrology. Records of astrology have been found which originate in Babylon, these have been found to date from 1645 BC. Early Egyptians and early Greeks produced a timekeeping system and also used a calendar just like the ones we use today. When early man started to observe and understand the world around him, he also began to realize that there was a relationship between his life and the earth, stars and planets. It is possible that astrology may have helped some of the earliest civilizations to understand who they were and where they came from. They most certainly perceived astrology and the world around them as something which was greater than they themselves were, and something which should be studied and understood.

Astrology in modern times is not seen as being a very credible science. At one time astrology was one of the most credible sciences, just as astrophysics or chemistry are today. Early astronomers such as Galileo and Copernicus were known to be practicing astrologers. The astronomer Claudius Ptolemy of whom very little is known, was seen as a leading intellectual of his day, Ptolemy’s study and approval of astrology made astrology a hugely respected subject within academic circles. By giving astrology credibility as a science and also as an art, he ensured its practice would not be hindered during the medieval period. It was at this time that many other studies and occult practices were persecuted on religious grounds. He was deemed to be an authority on astrology and established the Tetrabiblos, (this is Greek which means four books) this became the definitive reference for all astrological students. Arabic scholars used the Tetrabiblos quite extensively, and they regarded Ptolemy to be the absolute expert on the subject. Later European scholars began to use the Tetrabiblos and translated it back into Latin in the 12th century.

Modern sciences such as the quantitative sciences caused the influence of astrology to diminish, astrology did however have a resurgence during the 1930’s when Princess Margaret was born. In the United Kingdom the Sunday Express newspaper printed Princess Margaret’s astrological profile, this is how the daily horoscope in the newspapers we all know came about. Anyone who has read their astrological profile would have to admit that there are a number of coincidences. There are those skeptics who will often say that newspaper horoscopes are very general and could apply to just about anyone.

These skeptics will also say that people will only look for what they want to see, and they will ignore what is not true for them. Therefore, according to the skeptics, people delude themselves and believe that the horoscope is accurate. I believe that this skepticism could be eliminated if we were to sit the skeptic down with a competent astrologer and have his or her astrological profile made using the date, time and place of their birth.

The human race claims to be very knowledgeable about the universe, yet we find it very easy to dismiss astrology as being a credible science. Perhaps if we were to put more effort into the study of astrology as a science, we may learn much more about the early civilizations of our world. Shakespeare perhaps understood, when he wrote in Hamlet, *There are more things on heaven and earth Horatio than are dreamt of in your philosophy.*

Horoscopes - we have seen them in the newspapers and magazines, and if we have taken the time to read them they can, at times, be astonishingly accurate!

With only a little effort someone can read something that seems very relevant to themselves and seems to shed light on what the future may hold. There are even special interest horoscopes - how about a pet horoscope or a poker horoscope.

Its amazing stuff and if you want to find out a little about the science behind horoscopes this is a good place to start.

The newspaper and magazine horoscopes we all read are a very simplified forecast based on the positions of the sun signs - more about them later, though. In the meantime consider this. Professional astrologers use the words horoscope and ‘birth chart’ interchangeably and these charts are far more sophisticated than the simple horoscopes everyone reads in the newspapers.

A persons ‘birthchart’ is a diagram (usually a circle divided up into segments relating to the signs of the zodiac) showing where in the sky the planets were positioned at the date, time and place an individual was born.

From that it is possible to determine a great many of a persons characteristics and what the future may hold.

A sunsign is one of the most important elements in someones birth chart. The sun sign is the sign of the zodiac which the sun is travelling through when someone is born. Newspaper and magazine horoscopes simply reflect the influence of the sun sign but a proper horoscope takes into account the position of all of the stars and planets that astrologers are interested in. Lets look at what they are.

Firstly there are the sun signs:-

Aries (March 22nd - April 20th)
Taurus (April 21st - May 21st)
Gemini (May 22nd - June 22nd)
Cancer (June 23rd - July 23rd)
Leo (July 23rd - August 24th)
Virgo (August 25th - September 24th)
Libra (September 25th - October 24th)
Scorpio (October 25th - November 23rd)
Sagittarius (November 24th - December 23rd)
Capricorn (December 24th - January 22nd)
Aquarius (January 22nd - February 20th)
Pisces (February 21st - March 21st)

Secondly, astrologers need to be just as familiar with the Planets and their meanings as they do with sun signs. The planets are called Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Moon, Neptune, Saturn, Sun (yes, thats a planet too!), Uranus, Venus and Pluto.

So, altogether, astrology is a particularly complex discipline. A horoscope is easy enough to create as there are books and even software to practically do the job for you. However, learning how to interpret the resulting information accurately is a different matter altogether.
